Mrs. Campbell Dies in Crash

A 20-year old Norman woman died this morning of head injuries she received Thursday afternoon in a one-car accident on Oklahoma 77, just east of I-35.

Mrs. Dorothy K. Campbell, 915 E. Woods Ave., was transferred to St. Anthony Hospital in Oklahoma City from Norman after she was thrown through the windshield of her compact foreign car at 5:45 p.m.

She died about eight hours after the crash, in which a passenger, Katherine A. Sims, 20, received minor injuries.

Miss Sims, who apparently was thrown from the car, suffered multiple contusions and abrasions and is at Norman Municipal Hospital under observation.

Police estimated the auto's speed at 65 miles per hour at the time of the accident, which occurred 345 feet south of Franklin Road.

Witnesses told police it appeared that Mrs. Campbell went to sleep at the wheel and that Miss Sims was asleep in the rear seat of the automobile.

Police said the car went off the west side of Highway 77 and when Mrs. Campbell tried to regain control of the vehicle, it went into a skid, leaving 184 feet of black marks.

Patrolman Leon Sugg said the car overturned at least three times before Mrs. Campbell was thrown through the windshield. He said her body was found 63 feet from the automobile.

Arrangements for Mrs. Campbell are pending with Primrose Funeral Home.

A resident of Norman for the past 9 years, she was born Sept. 20, 1950 in Jacksonville, N.C. Mrs. Campbell was employed as a waitress at the Holiday Inn. She was a member of St. Joseph's Catholic Church.

Survivors include one daughter, Lou Ann Elizabeth Campbell; her parents, Mr. and Mrs. James Walsh, and two brothers, James H. and Frank E., all of the home; two sisters, Mrs. Mary Rose Register, Providence, R.I. and Mrs. Constance Elbert, Barricksville, W. Va.; her paternal grandmother, Mrs. Agnes M. Walsh, Pittsburgh, Pa., and her maternal grandmother, Mrs. Daisy McCarty, Savannah, Ga.
